ACEC 2023 Merit Award

The Creamery

We are honored to announce that our client’s project, The Creamery, has received The American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan 2023 Merit Award! Together with our client, Byce & Associates, Inc. along with Frederick Construction, created a new mixed-use, 59,420 SF facility, seated on 1.33 acres that once housed the Klover Gold Creamery.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan (ACEC/Michigan) recently honored firms for engineering and surveying excellence during the association’s annual Engineering and Surveying Excellence Awards Gala. On March 11, design professionals and guests gathered at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park to recognize outstanding Michigan engineering and surveying projects from the past year, as well as engineering professionals who have significantly contributed to the profession.

To successfully meld and blend the needs and objectives of construction cost effectiveness, mixed-use, urban infill development on a contaminated site, low-income market rate housing, and to achieve USGBC LEED for Homes, Platinum level is no simple task.  It took a team of dedicated engineers and architects and a committed owner/developer to devise a solution from practical, cost effective, proven principles into a holistic cost effective, energy efficient, compelling, and inspiring place to live and work and play.

This project has had unprecedented community participation, from the Kalamazoo County Land Bank’s initial neighborhood charrettes more than 12 years prior to the $1.5 million in local social impact investing generated through local, state, and national grants. This participation, coupled with a drive by Hollander Development Corporation, our team, and community stakeholders, pushed towards the surface ideas and an overall mission for this building to serve the community in a multitude of positive ways. One strong unique application to the building is the addition of a 24-hour YWCA day care facility, to assist local parents in the community that do not maintain traditional 9am – 5pm working hours. The entrance to the day care is heavily secured with its own private entrance and access point for drop-offs day or night.
